Nitrous oxide emissions from manured, no-till corn systems

چکیده

Using dairy manure and legumes in crop rotations can reduce inorganic N inputs for corn (Zea mays L.), yet these practices also contribute to nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. In two we investigated how different (i) organic amendments (ii) prior legume crops with broadcast influenced direct N2O emissions from silt-loam soils planted no-till corn. We measured fluxes April December years using closed vented chambers no spring residue compare fertilizer (S-UAN) liquid application methods: surface broadcasted (S-BM) injected (S-IM). Emissions were the effect of perennial forages, a green legume, or soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) all amended manure. Nitrous greatest during 15–45 days after was compared broadcasting, cumulative larger S-IM (2.8–2.5 kg ha?1) than S-BM (1.4–0.7 S-UAN (0.3 ha?1). Cumulative yield-scaled did not differ among treatments. A ranking approach based on random forests, identified most important variable contributing both comparisons as growing degree days, indicative asynchrony termination planting use; changing environmental conditions mineralization denitrification.

Nitrogen source and placement effects on soil nitrous oxide emissions from no-till corn.

A nitrogen (N) source comparison study was conducted to further evaluate the effects of inorganic N source and placement on growing-season and non-crop period soil nitrous oxide (NO). Commercially available controlled-release N fertilizers were evaluated for their potential to reduce NO emissions from a clay loam soil compared with conventionally used granular urea and urea-ammonium nitrate (UA...

Nitrous oxide emissions from corn-soybean systems in the midwest.

Soil N2O emissions from three corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] systems in central Iowa were measured from the spring of 2003 through February 2005. The three managements systems evaluated were full-width tillage (fall chisel plow, spring disk), no-till, and no-till with a rye (Secale cereale L. 'Rymin') winter cover crop. Four replicate plots of each treatment were establishe...

Long-term trends in nitrous oxide emissions, soil nitrogen, and crop yields of till and no-till cropping systems.

No-till cropping can increase soil C stocks and aggregation but patterns of long-term changes in N2O emissions, soil N availability, and crop yields still need to be resolved. We measured soil C accumulation, aggregation, soil water, N2O emissions, soil inorganic N, and crop yields in till and no-till corn-soybean-wheat rotations between 1989 and 2002 in southwestern Michigan and investigated w...

Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Irrigated Cropping Systems

We evaluated the eff ects of irrigated crop management practices on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from soil. Emissions were monitored from several irrigated cropping systems receiving N fertilizer rates ranging from 0 to 246 kg N ha−1 during the 2005 and 2006 growing seasons. Cropping systems included conventional-till (CT) continuous corn (Zea mays L.), no-till (NT) continuous corn, NT corn–dr...

Optimizing Strip-Till and No-Till Systems for Corn

Recent developments in biofuel demand and the rapid adoption of modern transgenic hybrids are changing production systems towards more corn after corn, more intensive tillage, higher plant populations, and ever higher crop residue levels at harvest. Meeting society’s needs for food, feed, and fuel from grain corn, and in the future from corn stover, requires continued refinement of tillage syst...
